Finding your first clients as a freelancer

First clients almost never come from a platform.

Finding your first clients as a freelancer

When starting out as a freelancer, the first reflex is often to sign up on every available platform and wait. In practice, first clients come far more often from an existing network activated intelligently: former colleagues, former employers, contacts who already know what you can do.

A portfolio, even a small one, is worth more than an empty profile. Two or three well-presented projects — even personal or fictional at first — give a prospect a concrete reason to trust you, where a list of skills is not enough.

The value proposition must be specific: "I do design" convinces far less than "I help DTC brands improve their mobile conversion rate". The more precise the message, the easier it is for someone else to refer you.

Finally, consistency matters more than intensity: publishing, exchanging, checking in with old contacts once a week builds, over several months, a far more stable flow of clients than a one-off prospecting campaign.
